In Switzerland, more than 100,000 people take their car driving test every year.
Would you like to take your driving test, but don't know where to start? This article is for you!
Steps to obtain your Swiss driver's license
Theory and paperwork
-
First aid course (samaritan): this is a compulsory 10-hour course, during which you will learn life-saving gestures.
-
Eye test for each learner's permit application. It must not be more than 24 months old, and must be carried out by a Swiss doctor or optician (the professional must stamp the learner's permit application form).
- Application form for learner's permit completed and sent to SAN with copy of first-aid certificate (samaritan). Pick up at L-pittet Echallens or download by clicking on the link.
- Theory test To learn the theory, we recommend youbuy an application and/or a book directly from our store. If you pass your theory test, you'll receive your learner's permit. It is valid for 24 months (more on the theory test in this article).
Practical information
- Practical driving with a qualified driving instructor and/or friends (can start after the awareness course, but we recommend a few hours' practice before taking the awareness course).
- Awareness course: this is a compulsory 8-hour, highly interactive course during which you will learn many useful things for your driving.
- Practical car test (More about the practical car test in this article).
Once you've passed the test
-
2-phase course: This is a one-day supplementary training course. This course is compulsory and must be completed within 12 months of passing the practical test. It takes place partly on the racetrack, to test your vehicle's grip limits, and partly on the road, to check your behavior and make you more aware of eco-driving.
Driving age
- 17 years of age.
Anyone under the age of 20 wishing to take the car driving test must have held a learner's permit for at least 12 months.
Conditions for driving with a relative
-
Have a student driver's license (permit B)
-
Be accompanied by a companion aged at least 23, who has held a Swiss category B driver's license for at least 3 years and is no longer on probation.
- The handbrake lever must be operable at all times by the attendant.
Tips for taking your driving test in the best conditions
-
Start driving with an instructor. Our instructors have a vehicle with dual controls, so they can react quickly to ensure your safety.
-
Get as many kilometers as possible with your loved ones. We've developed a connected application that saves you time in your training, because you can work even when you're not with your instructor.
- Plan your training with your instructor so that you arrive at the exam in optimum condition.
